1990's movie name, doomsday movie about unidentified objects aiming for earth?

The whole film is as though your watching various news channels, first there is just 1 object so we send missiles and destroy it, then there are more, and we destroy them, then there are hundreds and it becomes apparent that these arent asteroids, theyre alien craft. The news reporters start crying and saying goodbye to their famillies on air. Only saw this film once i think it was around 1997 time. Hope you can help guys. :-)
