Is there a way to better the quality of youtube videos?

I upload amv's (anime music videos) to youtube. I use sony vegas 7 to make videos but how do sharpen the quality. Youtube messes up about half of my videos quality. I use .avi and .wmv files both end up the same when uploaded to youtube.
